School systems require different responsibilities and different leadership roles to operate properly. The aspects of school are vast and range from daily maintenance of facilities and equipment to staffing and budgeting. School boards, superintendents, and principals have levels at which their responsibilities become specific.

The superintendent is the top executive, or CEO, in the educational system. The superintendent executes the school board’s vision by making decisions about educational programs, spending, staff, and facilities. As superintendent, the ultimate responsibility comes back to school finances and making certain that all requirements are met regarding accreditation, etc.

Local school boards govern local school districts and assure multiple perspectives regarding school business. The role of the school board is to secure school districts so they are responsive to the values, credences and priorities of their communities. Board positions are elected positions.

The role of the principal is to provide leadership, direction, and coordination of the school’s day-to-day operations. The principal’s main focus is to evolve and carry on effective educational programs within their school. Principals’ duties also often include coordinating transportation and scheduling activities.
