New Tech–We Don’t Have To Write It Any More

In November of 2022, a new website became available that is every highschool and college student’s dream and every teacher’s nightmare. ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence chatbot that will generate a response to whatever question a person asks it.

To use it a person has to sign up, and then type in a prompt. At that point, the user can literally watch it write the answer/essay. It is predictive text on steroids.  If users type in “write an essay about Christopher Columbus’ voyage to the new world in 2013”, it will write the essay with accurate information. Users can also customize the for specific word count requirements, and tailor details as needed.

Every student will love this website because when they have to write essays for class then they won’t have to do any of the work. They are excited because who wants to write a four page essay when there is a website that can do it for you for free?

“I think it’s good and bad. It can help a student to come up with ideas about what to write, but it could cause a lot of cheating,” Sariah Vargas, junior, said.

Teachers, however, are worried that students will not learn how to write. Then, when they have to do an in class writing assignment they won’t be able to do it. If students start using this really young, teachers are worried that they are setting themselves up for failure. While it is not plagiarism, it is also not students’ own work. Teachers want students to do their own work and are supposed to do it in order to learn. Teachers know that learning is more important than the actual grade.

“I believe that it’s a bad idea. It takes all of the personality out of your work,” Kassidy Pameticky, senior, said.

This is only a small fraction of what is to come in the future. This new technology presents ethical issues to students as well as teachers. Students have to choose whether to do their own work or not. Teachers have to decide how they will embrace this technology if at all. AI technology is still advancing and society will just have to learn how to live with it.

“I feel that essentially, students will do very little of their own work. Over the years, I have watched the decline of writing skills because students don’t see it as important. This will be the nail in the coffin,” Mr. Barney, English teacher, said.
