Dowell’s Density Debacle

On Thursday  Mrs. Dowell’s freshman science classes did an experiment in the lab.

The classes made density tubes, and Weston Waldrup decided to shake the tube. He hit it on a desk and broke the glass tube. Other than Weston’s debacle, the experiment went well.

The classes poured five different liquids into a tube. The five liquids each had a different density.

The students were supposed to learn how to tell if a liquid has a lower or higher density compared to the liquids around it.

After they poured the liquids into the tube they dropped different items including a staple, rubber band, and a piece of a cork.

The results of the experiment were, dark corn syrup is denser than water, mineral oil, corn oil, and ethyl alcohol.

The class also found out that a rubber band will not sink into corn oil. The staple went all the way to the bottom, and the cork did not sink at all.
