180 Days

More than 3,000 schools in America have transferred to year-round education. It is said to help kids remember everything they learn over the summer by making summer break shorter, but other breaks longer.

“I am against year-round school because I have been to a year-round school and it is harder to vacation,” Adrianna Doyle, tenth grader, said.

There are three ways that year-round schools can work. The first is the  45-15 plan where students attend school for forty-five weekdays, then get fifteen weekdays off. There is also the 60-30 plan in which students attend sixty days, then have thirty vacation days. Finally, the 90-30 plan places students in class for ninety days before a thirty-day break.

Summer break isn’t  just for the kids, but the teachers too. After 180 days of getting to school early and leaving late they look forward to summer break, but being in a year-round school they will not get as long of a summer break.

“I don’t think that year-round school is a good idea because summertime gives teachers time to do teacher workshops that help them prepare for the next school year,” Mrs. K, science teacher, said.

“I am not for it because, of sports camps and church camps that take place during the summer,” Kiara Elise, tenth grader, said.

Teenagers who are in year-round school cannot get a summer job. It can also be harder for parents to have time with their kids on the different schedule. Having a shorter summer can also affect summer camps for sports or other extracurricular activities that people attend school.

Students can just as easily forget information over three-week breaks as they can over three-month breaks, but instead of having one revision period when school starts, there will be multiple ones after every break.

“ I believe that students have the potential to regress over the summer, which is called the summer slide,” Mr. McPhail, high school principal, said.

“ I don’t think breaks affect the student’s retention because most students will retain information the interests them,” Mrs. Schiska, high school teacher, said.

Year-round school is not a good idea.
