Missing the Connection

Should the students at Canton High School be allowed to have their cell phones? Many students at Canton High School will say yes, having phones can be helpful. The students who do not have a calculator could use their phones as a calculator. For some kids, however, phones might be a distraction.

If teachers do not want students to have their phones out, then they could just say that phones are not allowed out in their specific class. “With Chromebooks in our school I don’t see how phones could add any value,” Mrs. Keefer, science teacher, said.

Allowing students to have their phones out could also be useful if their parents are planning on checking them out. Their parents could text them ahead of time so the students could notify their teachers and get their work from their classes.

Allowing phones may also prevent kids going to ISS. The reason most kids who end up in ISS or detention is because they got caught with their phone. At times students have asked for a restroom break so that they could actually use their phones. If phones were allowed, this wouldn’t be a factor.

Having phones does not have to be a bad thing. There are learning games, such as Kahoot.it, that students could play in class with the teachers. Many students either forget their Chromebook or did not charge the night before. Phones could also solve this problem. Students can download google classroom apps and do their work on their phone if they forgot to charge or bring their Chromebooks.

“Yes, students should get to have their phones if they can be responsible,” Eric Estala, freshman, said.

“Yes and no, it can be helpful to the students but it also would be easier to cheat. The students shouldn’t have their phones while teachers are lecturing,” Bethany Syzemore, alumni, said.

Students should be allowed to have their phones during their breaks and if a teacher allows them. They should not have them out while a teacher is talking to the class.
