Is Prom Worth It?

Is prom worth it? Prom is worth it, because if it is senior prom then it might be the last good memory students get to make with their classmates before they go off to different colleges. I plan on going to prom my junior and senior year, so I will have those memories to look back on.

Some girls who go to prom get to spend more time with their moms because their moms might go dress shopping with them and get to do their hair and makeup. I plan on taking my mom with me to dress shop and let my mom do my makeup and hair.

The actual prom, the decorations, and food, is paid by the junior class, but not out of students’ pockets. “We use class dues instead and they are $275 and can be earned by working in the concession stand or participating in class projects,” Mrs. Thompson, junior class sponsor, said.

Some people miss their prom because they can not afford the expensive things that prom includes. For a girl, the cost of nails will range from $20 to $30. The cost of the dress can be anywhere from $200 to $600. “ I expect to spend at around $600. It’s senior prom, I’m going all out,” Hannah Hood, senior, said.

For guys, the cost for a tuxedo will range from $300 to $500, and the shoes will be about $45. “I expect to spend $500 because my tux was $400 last year, and the boutonniere was $35. Also, I bought new black Converse, so it was more than four hundred dollars in all,” Eli Nix, senior, said.

Prom, with all the pressure and expenses, can definitely have a downside. It just depends on the people involved. “I think prom is an institution that has out lifted its usefulness. Prom served a purpose in the 1950s  when girls needed one last big dance before they got married,” Mrs. Barney, English teacher, said.

At Canton High School students can go to prom can go however they like, singles, couples, or in a group. “They can go single or with a date. They can come to prom in a group, but we introduce them individually,” Mrs. Thompson, junior class sponsor, said.

I will be going to my prom if I have someone to go with. I have been looking to going to my prom since I went to my cousin’s prom two years ago.
