After this It’s Over

On February 1st against Cherokee the five senior girl basketball players, Kalee Hysell, Gabby Martin, Lashayla Green, and Theresa Surveyor, will be playing their last game which is senior night at Canton High School. Our team has two team captains Gabby Martin and Kalee Hysell.  Hannah Hood will be attending the game, but will not be able to play due to an injury.

Kalee Hysell number 21 plays point guard. “I first got into basketball because of my brother liked it and so I thought I had to,” Kalee Hysell, senior basketball player, said. Kalee Hysell chose the basketball number 21 because that was her brother’s number.

“My senior year I want to achieve actually making it past districts,” Hysell, senior, said. She will miss all the times in the locker room and all the stupid things they did when pregaming. Hysell’s advice for future players is just always to work hard and have fun and enjoy it while it lasts because it will be over before they know it.

“It’s different with a new coach my senior year that’s for sure, but I honestly think it is a good thing for our team. He works with every person on our team to help them get better and that’s something we haven’t had in the past,” Hysell said.

Gabby Martin, number 42, plays as a post and guard. Gabby Martin is the tallest player on the team this year, with her height affecting her game by benefiting her when scoring and rebounding. “It can get hard when guarding a small quick guard. I’m playing harder than I have in the last years, but not really changing anything,” Gabby Martin, senior player, said.

Martin is going to miss the family feels that is within the team. Martin’s advice for future players is just because you’re the underdog on the team does not mean you can not get playing time. You put in the extra time learning the game then you will be rewarded.

“The person who inspired me to get into basketball would have to be my papa. He had me playing with a basketball at a really young age,” Martin, senior, said. “I want to achieve maybe all-state honors,” Martin said.

Theresa Surveyor, number 23, plays post and guard. Theresa Surveyor first got into basketball because it was something she grew up around because her siblings were always playing basketball. “I’m going to miss the bonding moments we have in the locker room before games,” Theresa Surveyor, senior basketball player, said.

Surveyor’s advice is just to play hard and have fun. “My injury from last year does effect this year because there are still these little pains while I’m playing sometimes and I’m not as confident in myself going into a game as I used to be. There’s that fear of re-injuring myself that holds me back sometimes,”

LaShayla Green is number 14 and plays guard and post. LaShayla Green just started basketball this year, and she wishes she would have played all four years. It is her senior year and her younger sister is a freshman and really wanted her to play with her this year at Canton High School.

Green’s advice for future players is to stick with it, it will be better in the long run. “It’s not my first year, and I hate how behind I am, but it’s good,” Green said.

Green’s life lesson from basketball is teamwork and family matters a lot. “I’m going to miss the stupid laughs and jokes,” Green said.
