8 or 7

Next year Canton Schools will be switching back to a 7-hour day. Both students and teachers have different opinions on whether or not they like the idea of switching. Most teachers do not like the idea of switching because they will lose one of their planning periods.

“I really need two planning periods, because it gives me time to do my extracurricular stuff like Student Council and Media,” Mrs. Barney, teacher, said.

Students like having an 8-hour day because it gives them one more elective class they can choose from. In an 8-hour day, the seventh and eighth grades get to choose two electives while the grades ninth through twelfth get to choose three electives. Also, the students like having an 8-hour day because the classes are shorter.

Some students like that Canton is switching to a 7-hour day because they do not have to go to so many classes. “There would be less walking, one less class to go to,” Jenny Delgado, junior at, said.

Teachers like the idea of switching because they would have more time to get stuff done in class. “It would give me more time to grade papers in class,” Mrs. Heath, teacher at Canton, said.

Having an 8-hour day causes more tardies, because students often have classes that are far apart, and they do not have time to go to their locker and still make it to class on time. “Yes having more time in between classes would prevent tardiness, unless people are hiding in the bathroom,” Jayden Mosqueda, freshman, said.

Students think that they would like the 8-hour day more than the 7-hour day because they are used to having an 8-hour day.
