On Saturday, February 24th, the Canton 7th/8th OJABA academic team played in regionals for a chance to go to state.  The team includes 8th graders Deuce Johnson, Braxton Thompson, Kylie Nix, and Kenzi Nix.  7th grader Luke Foster and 6th grader Blair Dowell are also members of the team.

The Tigers had a bye in the first round, which means they moved on without playing a game.  In the second round, the Tigers played Calumet and won,  They went on to round three and defeated Alex, giving them a bye in round four.  In round five, the Tigers were defeated by a team from Friend.  The Tigers faced Okeene in the sixth round.  Canton had beaten the team from Okeene in the District Tournament, however, Okeene came out on top this time.

Okeene went on to win the tournament, Friend was second, and Canton third.   The top three teams qualified for state.  The State Tournament will be held on the campus of the University of Oklahoma on April 21st.  Coach Ashlea Dowell said, “I was very proud of these kids.  They have improved a great deal, and are learning the strategies of selecting categories in the 60-second rounds.  This is the first year for Deuce to be a Captain, and he is doing a good job listening to his teammates.”
