FCCLA Attends Convention

On Thursday, April 12, eighteen Canton FCCLA members attended the FCCLA State Convention in Oklahoma City.

The convention began with an opening ceremony at 9:00 a.m. where guests, visitors, the 2018-19 officer candidates, honorary members, and many more were introduced. The students also had the opportunity to listen to the guest speaker, Hoan Do. “I learned to stay positive,” Brianna Redhat, sophomore, said of the guest speaker.

After the opening session, the students were dismissed to workshops. There were three workshop sessions. The students were split up by the color of their name tags. Those with a red name tag attended the workshop first, while the others either ate lunch or looked at exhibits. After the first workshop was over, the students rotated to their scheduled location.

Hoan Do was also the speaker for the workshops. He taught the students about setting goals and achieving them. He showed the students ways to keep a positive attitude, even when things were not going the right way. Hoan Do’s motto is “Hold up! That is whack!”

“The main point the speaker gave us was to push through to accomplish your goals,” Mrs. Haub, FCCLA advisor, said.

At 1:30, the students attended the closing session. Although they did not get one, the officers were hoping for a win on their distracted driving project. The officers designed a board based on driving safety. The sophomores, Ally Nix, Kalissa Wile, and Courtney Thompson presented the board to the judges. These three girls were also voting delegates and got to vote for the 2018-19 FCCLA State Officers.

FCCLA is a career and technology student organization sponsored by the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education, and it is an integral part of Family and Consumer Sciences Education programs in comprehensive high school areas and technology centers.

After the convention was over, Mrs. Haub treated the students to a few hours at Dave & Buster’s. They were provided a meal there and were also given a card loaded with tokens to play arcade games.
