On Monday, April 30, members of the yearbook and newspaper staff traveled to the University of Oklahoma to attend Oklahoma Scholastic Media’s Media Monday.

Each student attended five learning sessions. There were many options including Photoshop, InDesign tips and tricks, sports broadcasting, basic reporting skills, and setting up a student newspaper.

After the sessions were over, the group attended the awards ceremony.

“Our students’ entries for state contest were On Deadline, which means they received the prompt and had from March 9th to March 29th to interview, shoot video, and write the articles. We had spring break during this period, so our staff did their projects in three to four days,” Meridith Barney, newspaper advisor, said.

Kalissa Wile won first place overall in the photo gallery category and second place in the online video package category. The winning photo gallery and the video package were both of the Cherokee track meet.

Ethan Foster and Caden Koehn placed third overall in the online video package category. The entry was about the teacher walk out.

Taylor Dowell received third place in the online news reporting category. Her article was also about the teacher walk out.

The Claw was awarded the Award of Honors for its online news site

“I think it says everything that our kids stepped up and won the awards they won against schools the size of Edmond and Norman in the first year that we have had media. I’m proud of these guys,” Mr. Barney, newspaper advisor, said.

All winning entries are available to view on The Claw.
