Norman, Oklahoma – Norman Public Schools will not add another moment of silence Tuesday after the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk last week.
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walter issued a memo Monday directing Oklahoma schools to hold a moment of silence at noon on Sept. 16.
“In light of the recent tragedy, Oklahoma schools will join together to honor the memory of Charlie Kirk who engaged high school and college students to talk about American exceptionalism, Christianity’s role in society and our country’s history, as well as conservative values,” the letter read.
Norman Public Schools released a statement on its website acknowledging the memo but noted that the district already observes a daily moment of silence.
“NPS already follows the law and board policy 5010, which requires our schools to observe a minute of silence each day,” the statement said. “During this time, students and staff may reflect, meditate, pray, or engage in another silent activity, as long as it does not interfere with others.”
The district confirmed it will continue the daily practice and keep schools running as usual.
“Adding another minute of silence at (noon), as requested by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, would create an unnecessary disruption to the school day,” the statement read.
