Mrs. Clark is the new music teacher at Canton.

Who would think that a performance major from Walt Disney World College would be teaching in Canton, Oklahoma? Not Alison Clark.

She had never thought of herself becoming a music teacher, but she really enjoyed helping children learn to sing properly, so when she was asked to teach at Canton, she was excited. “I’ve always liked to teach individual people about music. I taught groups of children when I moved to Oklahoma, and at church we did musicals and stuff like that. I’ve given voice lessons, I taught a homeschool music class, and I loved it, so when they asked me to teach music here I was really excited.” Mrs. Clark, music teacher, said.

Mrs. Clark was born in Delaware and lived most of her life there. Throughout school, she liked to stay very busy.  She was constantly singing and playing instruments. She sang at church, she was in the drama club, French club, band, musicals, choir, select choir, student council, media clubs, and had a part-time job at the same time.

After high school, Mrs. Clark moved to Florida to go through the Walt Disney World College program and studied as a performance major. She had tried to become a character and told about the steps to become one, “First they measure you, and I measured to be with Winnie the Pooh or the Seven Dwarfs. Then they make you learn how to dance and how to do improv, but you weren’t allowed to speak during improv, so you had to use big and bold gestures to show what you were doing.” She showed some examples, like bathing a dog. “Afterwards they interview you and decide whether you are right for the job,” Clark said.

She later ended up hurting her leg, which kept her from portraying a character. However, she met her husband through the college program and ended up getting married. After that, they moved back to Delaware for 5 years, had their first daughter, then decided to move to Oklahoma and live on the farm.

Mrs. Clark had always liked teaching one-on-one music lessons, but after moving to Oklahoma, she started teaching groups of children how to sing and, she found out that she really liked it. “Music has the ability to bring everyone together, from different ages, backgrounds, and different countries. It’s unifying, and I love it,” Clark said.

In her high school music class, she teaches how to understand and appreciate music, the history of Rock & Roll, and how to sing.
