In 1915 a marvel of the modern world of engineering was erected. Named by residents of the area “Pi$$ Bridge”, was built to cross the North Canadian River. While the bridge may have been built in 1915, it has held up extremely well over the years, and is still functioning today. The bridge is on the North-Eastern side of town and has been, and will continue to be, a lifesaver due to the construction on the Highway 51 bridge.

Since the Highway 51 bridge is being worked on for several months “Pi$$ Bridge” has been a lifesaver because the alternative routes are several miles outside of Canton. These alternative routes add miles to a vehicle, use more gas, and also, depending on what route is taken,  could damage a vehicle. Not only costing the driver gas money, and miles on his/her car, but also the cost for damages which would not be cheap to fix.

“Pi$$ Bridge” has been a staple of Canton ever since it was built many years ago and it still is today. The bridge’s name comes from people urinating off of the bridge into the river. While the bridge itself is made out of concrete and steel, there is much more to it than that. The bridge is made up of the stories of family members seeing who was gutsy enough to jump from the bridge into the river, and also people meeting at the bridge to fight when they were in high school. There are too many stories to tell that involve “Pi$$ Bridge” in some way or another.

With all of these memories that have been made at “Pi$$ Bridge”, locals of the Canton area take pride in protecting the bridge from damage due to extra traffic in general due to current construction and over-sized vehicles for which the bridge isn’t rated. When semi trucks that are well over the 8 ton weight limit try to go across the bridge, Canton locals consider it their duty to report the vehicle to the police and the company that the particular driver is working for. Many other residents of the Canton are wanting to turn the bridge into a bridge that can only be used for walking to preserve it for years to come. If the bridge was destroyed many people fear that it would never be rebuilt due to the bridge’s age and how much it would cost to repair it.

While “Pi$$ Bridge” may be 103 years old, it continues to function just fine and will continue to due so if it is treated correctly. With so many stories revolving around and involving “Pi$$ Bridge” it would be a shame if something were to happen to the bridge because it would probably never be repaired.  While the bridge me be made of steel and concrete, there is much more to it than that. “Pi$$ Bridge” is made up of the stories of forefathers that have done fun and questionable things that involve the modern wonder of creation known as “Pi$$ Bridge.”
