Murray Wins Heisman

Murray Wins Heisman

On Saturday December 8th 2018 a man who was playing football for fun this year entered the ranks of legends. This year  OU’s Kyler Murray was breaking records left and right. He set the record for yards-per-play at 10.7, beating his old teammate Baker Mayfield who had set the record previously at 10.24 yards per game. This year Murray also averaged the most yards per attempt at 11.9 beating Mayfield again who had set the record at 11.7. The final record Murray broke was another record held by Mayfield. He took the record for highest pass efficiency rating at 205.7. Mayfield’s was almost two points under, at 203.76.

With this record setting year, Murray proved to Heisman voters that he deserved to beat the competition. Murray’s competitors were Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa and Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins. Both of these had great seasons also, but they both came up short of Murray. On any given year these other two quarterbacks could have won the Heisman, just not this one because of the performances Kyler Murray had this season.

This was Murray’s Junior Season making him eligible for one more of play if he decides he wants to play. Earlier this year Murray signed a contract with the MLB’s Oakland A’s, with a signing bonus worth 4.7 million. This leaves Murray with a tough choice–will he stay and play football another year, or will he head to Oakland and play baseball? Murray has said that he would like to play two professional sports, but does not know if he should. Thankfully Murray has a whole year to think about what to do and hopefully he will return to Oklahoma. The Sooners are set to play Alabama in the Orange Bowl on December 29th. If Murray led the Sooners past Alabama to National Championship it would be the first time since 2009, adding him to another rank of Sooner legends.
