The town of Canton had its first annual Christmas tree lighting on Wednesday, December 12. It was held on main street in front of Lemons and Lace and started at 4:30 in the afternoon. Anyone was allowed to join in on the activities as they pleased.

The Canton Choir sang an array of Christmas songs in front of the store as the first event of the night. The songs sung by the choir were “Hallelujah”, “Holly Jolly Christmas”, “Let it Snow”, “Rocking Around the Christmas Tree”, and “White Christmas”. The jolly spirit brought people together and also let them know where to be.

Soon after, ticket numbers were read for the chance to win gift cards. The gift cards ranged from $50 to $250. The first ticket number called got the $50 and the next got $75 and so on. The winners received their gift cards and took a group photo in front of the store.

Lastly, everyone wandered down to the large Christmas tree and gathered around it. The choir started a few carols, like “Deck the Halls” and “Frosty the Snowman”, for everyone to enjoy and join in. Then the moment came where everyone counted down the seconds until the tree was illuminated in the dark sky for the town to enjoy. People stayed around the tree to catch up with each other and before heading home.

Now the Christmas tree is a pretty and new sight for the people in Canton and for the people just passing through.
