It is next to impossible to imagine life without sight, but in Bird Box, Netflix’s newest hit movie, that is how main character Malorie portrayed by Sandra Bullock is forced to live. In this suspenseful horror thriller, only few can live with their eyes open outside of a blacked-in house or car. If a character in the movie does look and see the creatures, they immediately kill themselves.

This movie uses both flashbacks and flash-forwards into the future so the viewer must pay attention. At some points, the movie may seem confusing, because of it’s ever-changing viewpoint. It is, however, tied together in a nice bow at the end.

The movie gets its name because birds can tell when the creatures are nearby, and they can also tell who has been affected by the creatures. In the movie, while making a food run to a grocery store, Malorie grabs birds that were setting in a cage. These birds add hope throughout the whole movie because Malorie tells the kids early on that someday they would release the birds.

Birdbox goes way beyond the surface level of the movie. To me, it addresses a growing problem of mental illness and suicide in America. I think this because there are people who can look at the creatures, and these people are ones who were in mental asylums before the creatures came. They have no problems looking at the creatures because of their mental illness. They wanted to kill themselves before the creatures came.

This movie has plenty of twists and turns to keep the viewer engaged. It also has great acting from Sandra Bullock who uses the right emotions at the right times. It also has killer cliffhangers and shocking moments. All in all, I would give the movie a very solid four out of five stars.
