City On The Edge Of Battle

City On The Edge Of Battle

With the next film in the series, Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle, was released to Japanese theaters on May 18, 2018, and released worldwide on Netflix on July 18, 2018. The film was directed by Kobun Shizuno, Hiroyuki Seshita, with a screenplay written by Gen Urobuchi. Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle, is the sequel to Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters, and is the 33rd film in the Godzilla franchise.

The movie begins with the crew aboard the Aratrum debating about on what to do next after the original Godzilla (aka Godzilla Earth), makes his appearance destroying the three companies. They settle on waiting for forty-eight hours for any sign of survivors before they leave Earth and decide to settle elsewhere. Meanwhile, the main character Hauro Saikia wakes up in a hut. He regains his bearings and attempts to exit the hut. However, he startles a girl who was returning to the hut, and he decides to chase her, trying to find out where he is. After a long chase the two talk with the new character introducing herself as Maina.

After their conversation Hauro learns that humans evolved on Earth living alongside Godzilla Earth, he is then led to the other survivors from the Godzilla Earth attack. After a long debate with the other survivors, they are then led into the tribe’s cave, where they learn the tribe’s intentions. Another long debate starts when Hauro decides to contact the Aratrum and plans to defeat this new threat. After contacting the Aratrum, more companies are sent, and an expedition team is sent to look for the ruins of Mechagodzilla. The group, being led by Maina and Miana, comes across the remains of Mechagodzilla, whose head is still intact.

The two Bilusaludo in the group get to work reprogramming Mechagodzilla into Mechagodzilla City. After the creation of Mechagodzilla City, the reinforcements from the Aratrum arrive, and the Bilusaludo start creating new weapons from nanometal. The new mech suits are created the Bilusaludo and called the suits Vultures, and Hauro starts planning their next move against Godzilla Earth. With the help from the Biluasludo commander Galu-gu, the plan to destroy Godzilla Earth commences. Three Vultures are launched from Mechagodzilla City, piloted by Hauro, Galu-gu, and Yuko Tani.

The vultures are used to lure Godzilla Earth into a trap, where they will freeze his legs in nanometal, then ground and air forces will pound Godzilla’s shield. After luring Godzilla Earth into the trap, Galu-gu orders the Biluasludo to start pumping nanometal into the vultures. Galu-gu is then transformed into a powerful Bilusaludo by nanometal, Hauro learns that he is immune to nanometal, however, Yuko is unable to control the nanometal and falls into a coma.

While Godzilla is trapped, EMP harpoons are launched at Godzilla, trying to deactivate Godzilla’s shield. When he tries to recharge, however, Godzilla begins to make his temperature rise, causing the nanometal to melt. Godzilla then destroys the EMP harpoons and surrounding ground forces. Hauro then destroys Mechagodzilla City’s control room, stopping the nanometal transformation, killing Galu-gu, and stopping the nanometal transformation for Yuko.

After a long battle, Hauro is only able to weep over the body of Yuko while Godzilla walks from the ruins of Mechagodzilla City. Later Metphies an Exif approaches Hauro and tells him that there is a creature far worse than Godzilla, and it’s name is Ghidorah, ending the movie. With this movie in the series, Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle, falls behind the first movie, which introduced a faster-paced movie for the Godzilla franchise.

Also, the movie gave us new characters including; Maina and Miana who are twins and have a hidden Easter Egg from their appearance. They represent the twins who control the kaiju named Mothra, who is a giant moth. Also, Metphies introduced another kaiju, Ghidorah, who is a golden three-headed dragon. The movie managed to hold viewers by switching between fighting Godzilla and Hauro fighting Galu-gu. The effects for this movie were better than the first, with most of the new effects being used for Godzilla’s attacks.

The main story for the movie follows Hauro’s hate for Godzilla but also shows his human side by having many of his loved ones perish in battle, and fighting Galu-gu. The strong point of the movie is the battle for Mechagodzilla City, with the weak point taking place at the beginning of the movie at the tribe’s home. For rating, I would give this movie a four out of five stars.
