Rain Causes Problems At Canton Lake

Canton Lake has been flooded after historic spring rains, leaving the people of Canton to find other activities to do during the summertime.

Canton Lake has gotten 27 inches of rain since January 1, 2019, which is 8 inches above normal. 25.8 billion gallons of water flowed into the lake in May 2019. On June 25, 2019, the lake was the highest at level 1,625.62. Last summer Canton Lake level was at 1,615.55.

“It affected me by not being able to use all the boat ramps and not go to some of the beaches,” Will Blood, freshman, said.

Thunder Road was closed, Canadian dock was closed, and Big Bend boat dock, as well as various campsites, were closed.

Other activities in which Canton students participated were golfing, going to the movies, and playing basketball.

Citizens of Canton could still take boats out on the lake at one spot, but could not go swimming at Sandy Cove. Sandy Cove had water covering the restroom building and campsites.

“I went to the pool instead of going to the lake, played basketball, went to football practice, and hung out with friends, ” Nathan Janda, sophomore, said.
