Tobacco Law Takes Effect in Every State

On December 20, 2019, president Donald Trump signed legislation to amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetics Act to change the age to buy tobacco or vape products to 21 or older. It immediately took effect.

People who were 18 when the law changed cannot buy tobacco products, even though they could before. According to the American Lung Association, changing the age to 21 from 18 will help save lives.

“I think it’s pretty stupid, but I can still walk up to a 21 year old and still get stuff, so it’s really not helping anything,” Levi Shaw, junior, said.

Smokers who were aged 18 or 19 sometimes supplied tobacco products for younger kids, but since there’s hardly ever someone aged 21 in school, it will be harder for high school students to get a supplier for their tobacco habits.
