Free Fair Results

To avoid all the noise inside the barn Luke Foster blew his sheep outside. He also had more room outside than he would have inside.

On Saturday August 22, Canton FFA and 4-H exhibitors took a trip to Watonga to show in the Blaine County Free Fair. It was a great way to begin the show season with Canton being successful in every species. 

Starting off the gilt show, Maggie Clark took champion Berkshire gilt after winning her class. Brandon Day placed third with his Duroc. Brooke Taylor won second with her commercial and also took grand Hamp gilt. Taylor also placed first with her Hamp barrow.  Kenadie Weber placed fourth with her Duroc. Mackenzie Day took champion Poland gilt. Daylon McNabb placed third with his commercial gilt.  Lizzie Edwards took reserve champion Hamp gilt. Kelby Day placed second with his Spot. Levi Shaw took champion Poland in the barrow show.

In the doe goat show Amanda Schoonmaker placed second in class two and three in the lightweight division. Chase Dowell took fifth place in class three of the lightweight. Nick Sullins placed fourth and fifth in the middleweight division. Macie Clark placed third in her yearling doe class. 

Brieley Scott won first place in both class one and two with her southdown ewes. Scott also took reserve southdown, reserve purebred ewe, and reserve supreme ewe. Scott also showed Canton’s only wether sheep and placed second in her class. Luke Foster took champion Dorset after winning his class. Emma Hoffman placed third in her hampshire class. Hannah Hoffman placed fourth with her hampshire ewe.

Canton had it’s most success in the beef show. Weston Waldrep won his class and took Champion Charolais. He also won reserve continental and then went on to win reserve supreme heifer. 

Jake Sinclair won champion gelbvieh. Sinclair also won reserve cow calf pair. Hayden Thompson placed second with his simmental. Blair dowell won her class and also took champion chi. Emma Hoffman took reserve champion shorthorn plus after winning second in her class. Amanda Schoonmaker took reserve champion commercial and placed second with her other heifer. Jarrett Sinclair placed second with his commercial. Taylor Dowell placed first place with her commercial heifer. Dowell also won champion hereford steer. Waldrep also won grand simmental and grand champion prospect steer. 

During the cattle show Weston Waldrep’s heifer threw her head up and hit him in the head causing him to hit a fan near him and pass out. He later began having seizures and needed to be medflighted to Oklahoma City. Amanda Schoonmaker and Taylor Dowell stepped in and showed his livestock for him. 

“What got me the most was whenever Weston got hurt, the way all the other students jumped in and helped each other as one big group and not individuals.” ag teacher, Don Mitchel said.
