The Do’s and Don’ts of Being a New Student

Being a new student last year was difficult for me, especially starting my freshman year not knowing anyone at Canton. It was hard for me at first to talk to anyone because I am a shy person and I don’t really talk unless I get to know people more and feel comfortable. This isn’t the case with everyone, but for me it was. It got easier by the week and I finally became more comfortable with everyone.

Here are some do’s and don’ts I recommend to help anyone get through being a new student.

The Top 5 Do’s:

  1. Always pay attention in class especially when you’re new and you need to make a good impression of yourself in front of the teacher.
  2. Don’t be afraid to talk to people and introduce yourself to the people in the new school. It’s going to be awkward at first, but it’s better to just get the awkwardness out of the way.
  3. Always try to communicate with someone from the town you’re moving to so you’ll have a buddy to introduce you to new people.
  4. Be yourself even if people judge. You’ll find your true friends when you do that.
  5. Join a club, or even sports. It’ll help you interact with new people.

The Top 5 Don’ts:

  1. Never act like you’re better or act rude to people because then that just leaves a bad impression of yourself.
  2. Don’t stay in your comfort zone because if you do, you won’t be able to do new things in life without being afraid.
  3. Don’t lie about yourself, be honest.
  4. Don’t break the dress code even if you think you might be able to get by with it, from experience, you more than likely won’t.
  5. You shouldn’t pass along gossip or drama. Avoid it at all costs, don’t even bother to listen in on it.
