With everything going on this year, it can be hard for students to stay motivated with doing their school work and dealing with online school. With some students it can seem like homework is the least of their problems, or they say they can do it later, in most cases, however, later never comes.

According to Associated Press at Voanews.com, this year over 40% of students in the U.S., middle and high school, were failing at least one class. Many blame distance learning. While in distance learning, students feel no connection to the lesson and therefore feel no motivation to do their homework.

There are ways to stay motivated during online learning.

1. Get out of bed

As tempting as it sounds to lay in bed for online school, students need to get out of bed for online meets. It is hard for students to stay focused on school while still half asleep. Getting out of bed for online school can also help students be more alert.

2. Put down the phone

The biggest distractions students face nowadays are their phones. The average screen time for teenagers in American can fall anywhere between 4-9 hours a day according to Kristin Rogers at CNN Health.com. When students turn off their phones, they are more attentive and more likely to retain information from the lesson.

 3. Give rewards

According to the JMC Academy, when students reward themselves after they get their homework done, they start to get their work done a lot faster. Most students just reward themselves with small things like a snack or maybe even a nap depending on how much time was left before their next class.

4. Turn off the Xbox

Online games like Fortnight, Call of Duty, and Minecraft can be a huge distraction for students of all ages. There is no way for students to be paying attention in class if they are trying to get another win on Fortnight. While in online school the easiest thing to do is turn off the game console and focus on the class.

5. Get fresh air

Online school can be stressful and sometimes students just need a break. Taking a break between online classes and going outside for fresh air can help boost serotonin and help ease stress.

Students now are dealing with problems no other generation has faced. There are ups and downs and struggles to find ways to stay motivated, and teachers are grasping at straws to find ways to keep kids’ attention while learning through a screen. At some point, students need to learn what works for them to motivate themselves.
