Ruth Ware’s novel The Turn of the Key is a psychological gothic mystery that was published in 2019. The novel is similar to Henry James’s 1898 novel The Turn of the Screw. The novel The Turn of the Screw was adapted into a film called The Turning, which was released in 2020. The novel is about Rowen, a twenty-year-old woman who works as a live-in nanny taking care of ten-year-old Miles and eight-year-old Flora. She hears stories about murders that have happened in the home and the longer she stays the weirder things get. The novel’s ending will keep a lot of people thinking. 

• The Silent Patient

Alex Michaelids, The Silent Patient is a psychological thriller novel that was released in 2019. The plot revolves around a well-known painter who committed her husband’s murder. Theo Faber, a criminal psychotherapist, is fascinated by this and obsessed with determining her motive for her crime. This leads him down a path he never expected to take, and he discovers some truly terrifying things.

• The Maidens

Alex Michaelids latest novel, The Maidens, is a mystery/thriller that was released in June of this year. Mariana, a group therapist, is the protagonist of the novel. Professor Edward Fosca, she believes, is the one who murdered Tara. Mariana is willing to go to any length to prove that professor Edward Fosca is the murderer, even if it means risking her own life.

• Ninth House

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo is a paranormal dark academia fantasy novel that was released in October of 2019. The novel is about Alex Stern who attends Yale University, although the novel takes place in it’s own world where they use magic. Alex ends up at the University not because of her magic, but because she can see grays which are ghosts.Be warned that this novel has a lot murder, gore and talkes about a lot of serious topics like mental helth.

• The Shining 

If someone has seen the movie The Shining they should read the book The Shining. It is a gothic horror novel by Stephen King that was published in 1977. The novel is set in Colorado in the 1970’s and centers around the Torrance family. Jack is hired as the caretaker to the Overlook hotel. When his family moves in, they quickly realize that something isn’t right and that many terrible things have happened there.
