Venom: Let There be Carnage is Wildly Bittersweet
Venom: Let There be Carnage wasn’t as good as I thought it would be. I didn’t like the first Venom movie that much. It felt like it was missing so many things and the final product was just a choppy mess. It didn’t really have a satisfying story or a way of getting there.
My biggest complaint was Venom and his relationship with Eddy Brock. It just feels like it came out of nowhere. In one scene they hate each other and Venom is mad and then in the next scene he’s like, “I want to save humanity.”
Well, how did we get there?
I think the second movie is better than the first one. It’s a goofy and fun movie. It doesn’t take itself too seriously at all. It’s also pretty redundant when compared to the first movie because it does the same thing.
At the end of the first Venom movie, it’s like, “We’re going to save the world, eat bad guys, and be a hero that’s not afraid to rip some heads off,” and in the second movie they’re coming in like, “We’re not ripping heads off and you’re in timeout,” because Eddy Brock doesn’t want bad guys to get their heads eaten by Venom.
Pretty much the entire movie is just them arguing with each other. It is enjoyable because I think the writing is good. So the joking around and getting mad at each other and having these arguments is fun, but when it’s the entire first hour of the movie, it’s just kind of tiresome because we’ve already kind of seen that with the first movie.
I do love the actual fight with Carnage. I think at the end of the movie when they fight, it all works really well and it’s a very satisfying fight, but with everything leading up to that point, I feel like they didn’t know how to get it to that point. As a result, they just threw in what worked the first time for most people, which was the back and forth with Eddie Brock and Venom.
I didn’t have a bad time watching the movie. I enjoyed it because I thought the writing was strong in the arguing. They even sent Venom to a rave, so I think it’s clear that they were indulging in the silliness of the movie.
Overall though, I don’t really think it’s a great movie.
