We are now four months into 2023 and we can already see certain music genres and trends becoming popular. With the app Tiktok, many artists and trends can grow quickly, causing different songs to blow up. It also recharges music from past decades and makes it popular again. Examples of this this are Stevie Nicks and Nirvana. Not only are certain music genres becoming more popular, but new artists are emerging. 

  1. Pop

 The first genre of music that is obviously popular is pop music. Pop music is big among all    age groups. Pop music is considered very mainstream. It has a lot of subcategories too that are very popular such as K-Pop which started becoming more popular in the 2000s.  Songs like “Anti-Hero” by Taylor Swift and “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus are popular in the pop genre currently.

      2. Alternative 

Alternative music is considered to be less mainstream and is made by music artists who typically produce their music under independent labels instead of major ones. Some people may describe it as less intense than rock, but more intense than pop. Many people who like alternative music also have certain beliefs and styles. Some popular alternative songs are, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana and “Lost” by Linkin Park.

      3. Rock

Rock music has been around forever but it became fairly popular in the 40s and 50s and carried on its popularity into today. Rock music is music with a strong beat. Much like pop, it has many subgenres and is timeless music that people of all different ages find enjoyable. It also influences people’s fashion and languages. Songs such as “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen and “Too Far Gone” by Metallica are rock. 

      4. Indie 

Independent music which is better known as indie music is music that is produced independently. Indie music often does not go for commercial success.  Indie artists take more of a do-it-yourself approach to publishing their music. People who like indie music say they feel like it has a story. Songs like “Midnight City” by M83 and “Breezeblocks” by Alt-J are considered indie songs. 

      5. Country 

Country music is popular almost everywhere. Country music originates from southern and Southwestern U.S. music. The country genre influences fashion and behaviors. People who like country music say it is relatable and tells a story. Country songs that are currently popular are “Last Night” by Morgan Wallen, and “Oklahoma Smokeshow” by Zach Bryan.
