Let the Games Begin

On Friday, January 12, The members of Canton Special Olympics left at seven A.M. so they could arrive at El Reno by nine. After saying the creed, the athletes starting bowling. About an hour after starting, bowling scores were recorded and medals were handed out. Several athletes won gold and silver medals. After bowling everyone loaded up in the suburbans and headed to Norman, Oklahoma, to go to the hotel they would be staying at.

After arriving at the hotel and going to their rooms, some athletes and partners changed to go swimming. When they were finished swimming, the group ate at Cheddar’s. Upon returning to the hotel the team played games and went swimming again.

On Saturday morning the team left the hotel to bowl again in Oklahoma City. When everyone was finished bowling, medals were handed out. After receiving their awards, the team headed to eat one last time before returning home.

This year one member of the Canton Special Olympics, Nicole Hysell, was not present during Winter Games because she was in ICU at St. Anthony’s hospital. Nicole was the first athlete on this team when it was formed. This is the 9th year that Canton has participated in Winter Games. Athletes and Unified Partners must compete and qualify in area events during the season to advance to Winter Games.
