How Hispanics Celebrate Christmas

Depending on where they are from in Latin America, Hispanics celebrate Christmas in a variety of ways.

Because the majority of Hispanics are Catholic, religion plays an important role in Christmas celebrations. It is highly important to decorate homes with lights and nativity scenes.

Traditionally in America, Christmas is celebrated on Christmas Day, although Hispanics begin celebrating on Christmas Eve, which is known as Nochebuena. There is a lot of food on this night, such as tamales, pozole, menudo, gorditas, bunuelos, and mole (mo-ley) sauce with chicken and rice.

For Hispanic and Latino families living in America, it’s common to involve some American traditions for Christmas meals like turkey and ham. Ponche is also very important, it’s a hot cider drink made with fresh fruit. Ponche is composed of guava, hibiscus, tamarind, cinnamon sticks, sugar cane, and mandarin oranges.

While American families wait for Santa to come, Hispanics begin opening their gifts as soon as the clock strikes twelve. Most Hispanics also celebrate Christmas with posadas. This begins nine days before Christmas being the 16th of December until the 24th. This includes caroling, breaking a pinata, and having a feast for those nine days. They will be hosted by different people taking turns.

Many Hispanic families living in America do keep some of these traditions although many incorporate American traditions too. Without a doubt, they would still have a feast on the 24th, but they would only get to open one gift and wait for Santa to open the rest the next morning.
