Stock Show Season Begins

After months of hard work, some Canton FFA and 4-H members began the 2018 Stock Show season.  A swine jackpot show was held Saturday, January 20, in Kingfisher, Oklahoma.  Some members were unable to attend due to the Okeene Basketball Tournament being held the same day.  At this show, male and female pigs competed against each other.  This will be different at our local, county, district, and state shows.  Pigs were divided based on their breeds and their weights.

Canton students showed Duroc, Hereford, Poland China, Spot, and Crossbred pigs.  The most successful Canton students at the show were Claire Elder, who placed first in the lightweight Duroc class, and Kamdyn Hulse who also had a class winner in the lightweight Poland China class. Zane Foster also exhibited a first place winner in the 3rd class of Hereford pigs.  Other exhibitors from Canton include Blair Dowell, Kyla Withers, Jacobi Withers, Weston Waldrep, Levi Shaw, and Amanda Schoonmaker.

The next stock show is Canton’s local show, which will be held Saturday, February 3.  Swine, beef, lambs, and goats will be shown.  The Canton agricultural education teacher is Don Mitchell.

“The kids did extremely well for their first show. I was pleased with the way everything looked and did. We have some things to work on like hair, weight, and getting the pigs in better shape,” Don Mitchell, ag teacher, said.
