Academic Season in Full Swing

Canton has been very successful competing in the Oklahoma Junior Academic Bowl Association (OJABA).  In fact, Canton has back-to-back State Championships the last two years, winning the 8th/9th-grade division last year and the 7th/8th-grade division two years ago.

This year, Canton has 5th/6th, 6th/7th, 7th/8th, and 8th/9th-grade teams.  Teams must be comprised of students in the grades of the division or younger.  Mr. Haub is the coach of the 5th/6th grade Canton team, and Mrs. Dowell is the coach of Canton’s other three teams.

The 5th/6th-grade team won the district competition and did very well in the regional competition held at Canton on January 27th.  They lost a match to qualify for the state competition by only one question.

The 6th/7th-grade team competed earlier this month in the district competition and will play for their chance to go to state in the regional competition on February 10th.

On January 31, 2018, the 7th/8th-grade team was successful in winning the district tournament, defeating the other teams from Calumet, Okeene, and Taloga.  They will compete in regionals on February 24th.

The 8th/9th-grade team has three members of the previous back-to-back Champions teams.  This team competed in Canute earlier in the month in the district tournament and will compete on February 9th at Kremlin-Hillsdale for their chance to go to state.

Mrs. Dowell, junior high academic coach, said of her teams, “I really enjoy coaching the junior high academic teams.  We have really bright students, and our teachers do a great job in the classroom.”
