Mr.Mitchell and his newly built grain boxes.

Phil Smith was a wood shop teacher for 42 years at Granite High School. He recently volunteered his time to come to Canton High School and help the FFA students build grain boxes for competition. There were 52 boxes cut and put together. Now they are being stained and sealed.

These boxes have taken 32 to 36 hours to build and finish.   Countless hours have been volunteered by Smith and others for these students to be able to compete and win. The Canton FFA found a branding iron with a C and branded the boxes.  These boxes are sturdier and easy to work with than the boxes they have used in years past.

Staining and sealing the boxes helps present the grains, enhancing the grains’ colors while in the boxes at competition.

The crops and new crop boxes will first compete next week at the Oklahoma State Fair.
