With 2021 coming to a close, the time has come to take a look at current fashion styles. The times are changing and so are fashion trends. The year started with baggy jeans and oversized t-shirts. Skinny jeans and crop tops are very much dead, baggier clothes are in style and have evolved from there. Here’s a look at what individual styles that students like to wear.

1. Grungy

Grunge fashion came into view in the mid 1980s and became a well known style in the 90s. This fashion style and subculture was a derivative of the grunge music genre. Grunge was popularized during this time by groups like Nirvana, Van Halen, Guns and Roses, and many more. This style has become a classic aesthetic and today this style is worn in a more androgynous loose or oversized way. This style genre is more of an edgy style and is associated with darker and earthy colors. Flannels, oversize graphic and band tees, baggy jeans, distressed or patterned tights, and high top Converses are all associated with the grungy style.

2. Vintage

Vintage is a very broad style genre. Anything that is 15-20 years old is considered vintage. Sweater vests and diamond sweaters have recently been really popular within this style. A lot of people have been styling them with white button ups underneath. More specifically the vintage retro styles of the 80s and 70s have been really popular. Patterned wide leg jeans and funky geometric sweaters are in style. Trousers which have replaced skinny jeans are very popular right now. A lot of people have been styling them with oversized sweaters tucked in and chunky sneakers to give off the vintage look.

3. Indie

When most people think about the Indie style today, they associate it with Kidcore. While these styles can be similar in ways, they are different. A lot of people can also confuse this style with Alternative because in the mid 90s the original Indie style did not consist of super bright colors. The Indie style today focuses more on individuality and independence, free-spirit, music, and skater culture. This style and aesthetic consists of a lot of highly saturated colors and is unique in a different way. Handmade clothes and accessories like necklaces and bracelets are very popular within this style. Colorful oversized tees, sweatshirts. Artists like Lorde, Beach Bunny, Cavetown, Hozier, and Tame Impala are some popular artists that fall under this aesthetic.

4. Y2K

Y2K, which stands for the year 2000, focuses on fashion during the 90s and early to mid 2000s. Think Bratz Dolls and Mean Girls for example. This style consists of wide-leg denim jeans or low rise jeans, crop tops and baby tees, small bags, denim on denim, colorful small sunglasses, butterfly clips, and pleated skirts are clothes that resonate with this style. Colorful plaid and butterfly print are very popular within the Y2K style but really any top with a quirky pattern or saying typically in bedazzled lettering are very popular. This is inspired by popular brands like Juicy Couture.

5. Western

Dressing western or country is a staple style and it has been for a long time and is a style that a lot of our students wear on a daily basis. This style is very practical and functional. This style is mostly worn by people who show animals, take care of some kind of livestock, farm or live on farms. Wranglers, boots, Hey Dudes, buckle belts, flannels, cowboy, and cowgirl hats are associated with this style.
