How to Break Bad Habits

I tend to pick or bite my nails and I rub my thumb across the lower part of my opposite palm. Messing with my nails the way I do can be very painful sometimes. I have little nubs because I pick and bite so much of my nails off. Rubbing my thumb across my palm when I’m nervous causes the skin to peel off in that area from rubbing too hard.

Everyone has at least one bad habit that they can’t seem to break. Trying to get rid of habits is difficult, and there are not always easy solutions. Whether it’s slouching, fidgeting, or procrastinating, here is a way to help throw those habits out the window.

According to the article “How to Break a Habit” there’s a theory called the 3R’s reminder, routine, reward. A reminder is like a trigger that can set off a bad habit. The routine is the bad habit or behavior. Rewards make the habit stick because it can cause some relief.

When I realize that I’m picking at my nails I try to focus on something else that can distract my mind, my hands, or both. When I’m nervous, I try to calm down as much as possible and I lock my hands together so that I’m not rubbing the skin off them.
