Kylie Takes the Cake

Last week in Mrs. Haub’s class Ashlyn Ruiz and I made a cake. Now I’m no chef, but the cake was pretty bomb, so I decided to share the recipe so everyone can make it.

Start with one vanilla cake mix from a box and follow all the instructions. Then add dye. We did blue and green to give it that earthy look. We then baked it for 20 minutes. While the cake was baking, I made some fondant out of marshmallows and powdered sugar. After we got finished baking, it was time to leave, so we put it in the frig and left.

The next day we started decorating it. We started by doing a crumb coat, then placed it back into the fridge for 5 minutes. While the cake was in the frig I made fondant dinosaurs. Then Kenzi and Ashlyn melted the frosting a little bit and dumped it on top. After the sides were frosted, we got Oreo cookie crumbs and put them on the side of the cake. After that, we put a green piece of fondant on the top of the cake. Before we knew it, it was time to leave.

The third day of making was definitely one of the most fun. We placed some Oreos on the cake and put brown frosting around it to make it a volcano. Then we melted red frosting and dumped it into the center of the volcano and spilled some down the sides. Then Ashlyn made some other dinosaurs out of fondant because someone destroyed the ones I made (cough cough Kenzi and Ashlyn). After the lava was spewing out of the cake we added shiny red sprinkles to give it some ashes.

I was so proud of us. It tasted exactly like Walmart cake, not the frosting, but the cake itself. I guess Walmart’s secret is to keep cakes in the fridge for at least 13 hours. I didn’t know how the Oreo cookies were going to taste, but they were surprisingly good and they added a nice crunch. Overall I would give the cake a 9 out of 10, and definitely recommend making it.
